Chapter Eleven

"It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even in a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime" (151)

Respond to this quote considering how it relates to not only the novel, but to your own life.

  1. An unexpected illness, accident or death in the family -- we have all experienced life changing events. What distinguishes one person from another is how we absorb and react to these changes. Some of us are lucky enough to have the support of family,community,finances,etc...But what happens when all of your supports have been destroyed? What do you draw from? How do you turn a negative into a positive?

  5. I think that this quote is strongly related to the novel because in the course of one day the path of Amir’s life is altered. What happens to Hassan is a major turning point in Amir’s character and becomes important in choices he makes for the rest of his life. People can spend their lives trying to make up for one mistake made in an instant. What if we all thought before we spoke or acted, would there be less regret in our lives? Easier said than done I think.
There are also positive things such as the birth of a child which can change people’s priorities for the better. In the end I think it is still up to the individual to live their own life. Right?

  6. Ya it is up to an individual to live there own life. Life is what you make out of it. But when you have something taken from you or something outside of your power changes your path in life. It is hard to keep a smile on your face. Somtimes you have to feel down but i think that is also part of life.

I don't no how one would cope with an accident, or a death of a friend or family member.

  7. I think that the events of one day can definitely change a person's life. When the change is negative and all of the person's supports are gone you can truly see the kind of person someone is. That's when you can distinguish between the people that never give up and the people that quit. I think the choices Amir made when he was a young boy are understandable. None of us can know how we would react unless we were put in that situation so I don't think it's fair to judge Amir. Everyone's made mistakes his just seem a lot worse. But I think the fact that he faces his past again when he is older shows character and he is not as bad as we all thought.
