Consider Baba's actions in this chapter. He stands up to the Russian soldier even though his life is at risk. How do Baba's actions contrast Amir's earlier behavior in Chapter Seven - the scene in the alley?
Baba's actions in this chapter are a complete contrast of Amir's earlier actions because of the fact that Baba was willing to stand up for a woman that he didn't even know. Baba showed courage and respect. Baba was willing to sacrifice himself for someone else. Amir on the other hand wouldn't even stand up for his own friend in the alley because he was scared of what Assef would do to him. This showed cowardness and selfishness.
I think it does make a difference that Bubba is an adult and Amir is just a child, because Baba may have had many past experiences that cause him to become braver, and more willing to stand up for another person, whether or not he was previously acquainted with that person. He may also be acting so noble to make up for past sins. Amir is has not lived as full a life as Baba and has not yet discovered that helping others may help him forget his own past sins.
I also do think that it does make a difference between Baba and Amir, one being an adult and one a child, but I think that Amir being raised by a man such as Baba he would have more responsibility and knowledge to help out Hassan. Amir obviously has remorse over his lack of action in the alley and this shows that he may have learnt some respect from Baba over the years. Yes, Shelby I do agree with you that he may not have learnt yet how to cope with his past sins by helping others.
Amir chickens out and does not stand up for what is right. Baba does the opposite. Just shows the apparent split between the two.

ReplyDeleteTrue enough, but does it make a difference that Amir is a boy and Baba is an adult? That Baba is filled with confidence and Amir is not?
